How to Motivate Yourself to Go to the Gym

Motivating yourself to go to the gym can be really difficult, and sometimes it's much easier not to. However, the gym is excellent for your mental and physical health. This guide explains three simple ways to get motivated for the gym.

Get Rid of Obstacles and Resistance

The first thing you can do to motivate yourself is to get rid of any obstacles in your way. Think about why you sometimes don't make it to the gym. You can then consider those obstacles, and work out a way around them. For example, perhaps you don't like your gym clothes, and buying new ones would help. Perhaps your particular gym is too far away, or you're trying to go at the wrong time of day. It might be the case that you feel more motivated early in the morning, rather than after work. Whatever the case, there's sure to be a way that the gym can fit your schedule.

Find a Gym Buddy

It's also a good idea to find someone who can come to the gym with you. This is useful for a few reasons. The first is that you can motivate and encourage each other, making you associate your friendship and positive feedback with the gym. The other main reason is that it will hold you accountable — you're much more likely to get up and go to the gym if you know someone's waiting for you. If you don't have a gym friend, hiring a personal trainer might give you the same motivation, as you know someone is relying on you to be there.

Have a Plan for the Gym

Having a plan each time you go to the gym can be really motivating. Otherwise, you might feel like you just go in, do some random exercises that don't make you feel good, and then leave. Self has a great article about how following a fitness plan is one of the best ways to achieve your fitness goals. If you have a plan in mind, then you'll know as you enter the gym exactly what you need to do before you leave, allowing you to work out quickly and efficiently. It'll also help you get progressively fitter, leading to a feeling of accomplishment.

By eliminating obstacles, finding another person to hold you accountable, and working out a fitness plan that suits you, you can make going to the gym seem more appealing, allowing you to improve your fitness and physical health.

About Me

Emma's Exercise Excellent Blog

Learning to exercise can be difficult. Believe me, I know. For many years, I struggled to go from being a couch potato to someone who goes to the gym. My name is Emma and this is my exercise blog. I decided to start this blog to encourage others to get fit and active. My life changed when I made friends with a woman called Sally. Sally taught me all I needed to know and would knock on my door every morning asking me if I was going to go with her to the gym or the pool. I hope you like my blog.
